The 1st of January 2017, The Norwegian Institute of Local history (NLI) became a part of The National Library of Norway.
The Institute’s main purpose is to promote local and regional historical activity in Norway. This is chiefly realised through two measures. First of all by giving advice and guidance to authors of local history studies, and secondly by carrying out its own research projects of relevance for the discipline.
The Institute was founded in 1955, and became functional during the following year.
NLI is responsible for the websites lokalhistoriewiki.no and historieblogg.no. NLI also publishes sources, handbooks, overviews of literature and sources, questioners, as well as other aids for local historians. NLI also organises seminars and conferences related to local history topics.
